Topic starter

Generally NO — standard of care generally requires immediate lab tests in order to safely prescribe PEP and this cannot be done via telemedicine.

When to consider PEP

✔ Your exposure was within 72 hours
✔ The exposure is considered high risk, such as:

  • Unprotected sex with a partner of unknown or positive HIV status

  • Condom break

  • Needle sharing

  • Sexual assault
✔ You have no medical contraindications
✔ You can access a pharmacy immediately (PEP must be started ASAP)

Important facts about PEP

  • Must start within 72 hours (earlier = better)

  • Taken daily for 28 days

  • Very effective when started promptly

  • Baseline & follow-up HIV testing still required

Bottom line

NO-- In person care at a full service urgent care or emergency room is usually preferable when seeking PEP.
