NO, generally an in-person visit is required

You may be asked to be seen in person if:

  • It’s a new or acute condition that hasn’t been evaluated before

  • A physical exam is necessary to justify leave

  • There are workplace injury or workers’ comp implications

  • Your employer requires in-person verification

  • Disability paperwork is also being requested

  • The provider does not have enough documentation to support the claim

Hospitals, large employers, and disability insurers sometimes have stricter rules than standard FMLA.

📝 Tips to prepare for an FMLA telehealth visit

Have ready:

  • Your employer’s FMLA form

  • Dates of leave requested (start, expected duration, intermittent vs continuous)

  • Description of how your condition limits work

  • Treatment plan & follow-ups

  • Prior visit notes or diagnoses (if from another provider)

Sharing specifics helps the clinician determine whether they can ethically certify the form.   Fill out as much of the form yourself as you are able, this will help your doctor save time.

Bottom line

✔ Some telemedicine providers may complete FMLA paperwork, but most do not.  Check ahead of time before scheduling an appointment.
✔ It works best when you have an established condition & treatment history
✔ Some cases still require in-person evaluation
