Yes — anxiety is commonly evaluated and treated through telemedicine, especially for mild to moderate symptoms.

Many primary-care clinicians, psychiatrists, and therapists provide virtual visits that can help with:

👍 Situations where telemedicine is usually appropriate

  • Generalized anxiety / persistent worry

  • Panic attacks that are not happening right now

  • Social anxiety

  • Work- or life-stress-related anxiety

  • Medication follow-up or refills

  • Therapy or counseling sessions

  • Review of sleep, triggers, and coping strategies

During a virtual visit, a clinician can typically:

  • Review symptoms, duration, and impact on daily life

  • Screen for depression, panic disorder, or trauma-related symptoms

  • Discuss lifestyle + coping strategies

  • Provide or adjust medications when appropriate (SSRI/SNRI, buspirone, etc.)

  • Refer to or provide therapy (CBT, mindfulness-based therapy, etc.)

  • Create a follow-up and safety plan

🟡 Telemedicine may be appropriate but may need closer follow-up if you have:

  • Symptoms that are worsening or interfering with work/school

  • History of severe depression or bipolar disorder

  • Recent medication changes

  • Significant sleep problems, weight loss, or substance use

  • Uncertainty whether symptoms are anxiety vs. a medical cause (thyroid, arrhythmia, etc.)

A clinician may recommend:

  • Lab work or vitals in person

  • Psychiatry referral

  • More frequent check-ins early in treatment

🔴 Seek urgent in-person or emergency care — not telemedicine — if you have:

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

  • Feeling unsafe or unable to cope

  • Severe panic or breathing trouble right now

  • New confusion, chest pain, or fainting

If any of those apply, please seek immediate help (ER/urgent care, 911 in the U.S., or local crisis services).

If you develop suicidal thoughts or need help please call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on 988, chat on 988lifeline.org, or text HOME to 741741 to connect with a crisis counselor.
